FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Service Dog?

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. These tasks can include guiding individuals who are blind, alerting those who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, or retrieving items. Service dogs assist with both visible and invisible disabilities, such as:

  • Sensory impairments (e.g., low vision, hearing loss)
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Autism
  • Epilepsy
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

What is an Emotional Support Animal (ESA)?

An Emotional Support Animal provides comfort and companionship to individuals with mental or emotional conditions. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not required to perform specific tasks related to a disability. Under the Fair Housing Amendments Act (FHAA), individuals with a valid letter from a licensed healthcare professional (dated within the past year) can have their ESA live with them, even in housing with no-pet policies. ESAs do not require specialized training.

What is a Therapy Dog?

Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort and affection to people in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and other settings. They do not have public access rights under the ADA and are not considered service animals.
